Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC) is seeking candidates for three seasonal naturalist positions. Seasonal Naturalists at LLCC both learn and teach. They learn through observation of and interaction with our creative and dynamic staff of Naturalists. They teach by sharing knowledge with students, and also by bringing fresh insights and individual expertise to our community.

Seasonal Naturalist responsibilities:

  • care for the health, safety, enjoyment, and enrichment of our visiting students.
  • observe, take notes, and teach classes.
  • teach and lead classes independently, once comfortable with the curriculum.
  • work weekends on a rotating basis.
  • willingly work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • assist in all aspects of the education department (critter care, equipment upkeep, etc.).

Seasonal Naturalist benefits:

  • learn about all aspects of a residential learning center, including food service, maintenance, and administration.
  • receive regular evaluations and feedback from the Instruction Coordinator.
  • live on campus in a private apartment at the south end of the North Star Lodge. (The apartment has private sleeping quarters, and shared living space. Computer with internet access is available.)
  • be provided with room, board, and a stipend of $275.00/week.
  • CPR and standard first aid certification will be provided if so needed

Seasonal Naturalists come to LLCC for an entire academic year; September through May. It is also possible to spend either the fall or spring term. Seasonal Naturalists may also return for an additional academic year.

Seasonal Naturalists are recent graduates with bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences, environmental education, recreation, or related fields. We also consider applicants from a wider variety of fields. Responsibilities/privileges may vary according to prior experience.

Seasonal Naturalists are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Positions are now available for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Assistant Summer Camp Director Position

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC) is hiring an assistant summer camp director for our summer camp programs. 2010 summer camp sessions include: Outdoor Explorers residential camp serves campers who have completed grades 4th through 7th grade; Forkhorn I & II camps are designed for beginning hunters ages 11-16.

The period of employment will be from June 23-August 18, 2010.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Communication skills
  • Diplomacy
  • Experience working with children
  • Organization
  • Patience
  • Camp experiences as a child or employee
  • Preference given to applicants who have worked at an environmental learning center
  • Must have at least 3 years or college or have completed a 4 year degree in a science-related field
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions
  • 21 years of age
  • Prefer—Willingness to be certified as a firearm safety instructor or current certification
  • Prefer—Experience/comfort with firearms and hunting
  • Prefer—applicants with lifeguard certification

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with LLCC staff members
  • Handle camper discipline issues respectfully and effectively
  • Monitor the health and safety of campers and distribute medications
  • Develop camper room assignments and activity groups
  • Ensure the smooth operation of summer activities
  • Motivate and work with counselors
  • Follow procedures provided
  • Prepare and organize activities—recreation, campfires, scavenger hunts, and others
  • Organize the movement of groups and individuals
  • Coordinate activities at the water front
  • Give directions to others

 Compensation:

  • $350.00 per week. Additional $15 per week for current certification as a Lifeguard
  • LLCC will provide you with lodging. Meals will be provided while camps are in session as well as during the training period.
  • LLCC will provide CPR and basic first aid training, as well as certification as a Firearms Safety Instructor. After successfully completing the class, you will receive your firearms safety certification.

Summer Program Counselor/Instructor
Positions Available

Long Lake Conservation Center (LLCC) is looking for confident, enthusiastic, young outdoors people to serve a dual position as summer program counselor/instructor.

LLCC is Minnesota's original conservation education summer camp (40+ years), and a leader in conservation/ environmental education. Summer camp sessions include: Outdoor Explorers residential camp serves campers who have completed 4th -7th grade; Forkhorn I & II camps are designed for beginning hunters ages 11-16.

Where: LLCC is located near Palisade, in north-central Minnesota. In the heart of Aitkin County, LLCC is part of the “north woods”. LLCC is located 135 miles north of the Twin Cities, 75 miles west of Duluth, and 50 miles northeast of Brainerd.

When: From June 30 through August 13, 2010.

Summer employee responsibilities:

  • Instruct campers in numerous classes and activities.
  • Supervise, organize, and assist campers during sessions.
  • Oversee campers in activities such as swimming, canoeing, outdoor recreation, and environmental education.

Qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to enjoy and work with youth is essential.
  • Love of the outdoors.
  • Preferred, but not required:
  • Four year degree in a science-related field.
  • Prior summer camp experience.
  • Lifeguard experience very desirable.
  • Experience with firearms and hunting.
  • Willingness to be trained as a firearm safety and bow hunting instructor

Compensation: The pay is $250.00/week for the summer. LLCC will provide you with lodging. Meals will be provided while camps are in session as well as during the training period.
