Red Winged Blackbird at LLCC

Phenology Archive...

Monarch butterflyPhenology is the observation of natural phenomena as relates to the changing seasons. At Long Lake, we've been keeping a running list of observations by staff and visitors for many years now. Records since 1998 are available here. Use the archive menu below to compare this year's seasonal changes with those of past years.

Questions you might ask:

  • When is the first frost?

  • When do lakes freeze up?

  • When do chickadees begin singing?

  • When do monarchs return?

  • How much to these dates vary?

We hope you find our archive useful. . . or at least interesting!

Activity:  You can easily start your own phenology archive to see how things change, or remain the same, from year to year.  Use a calendar with space to write to jot down things you observe, such as the temp, the weather, birds you see, or any signs of the changing of the seasons.  Anything that you notice about nature. Enter the time of day you observe the activity.  Keep your records and compare them as years go by to look for patterns or similarities of animal and bird movements or changes in the weather and other natural phenomena.
